Christianity and Crisis | Round Table with Tornike Metreveli, Valentina Napolitano, Elisabeth Shakman Hurd & Ulrich Schmiedel

This episode of R&T, and special edition of the Conversations Series, is a panel discussion from the conference Christianity and Crisis in European Contexts (28-29/10 2022) held at CTR. Johanna Gustafsson Lundberg opens the episode, by introducing us to the moderator, Göran Rosenberg, as well as speakers Tornike Metreveli, Valentina Napolitano, Elisabeth Shakman Hurd & Ulrich Schmiedel.  
In recent years, the integrity and identity of Europe have been challenged. So-called populist and nationalist movements have reshaped several European democracies’ political landscapes, the Coronavirus Pandemic has put pressure on Europe’s health care systems and economies, and a recent invasion of Ukraine has raised major questions about the borders and capacities of Europe’s economic and defense alliances. In this context, political figures, religious leaders and others have drawn on strands of Christian traditions to mediate between various parties, including governments, religious institutions, research institutions, and private citizens. This conference aims to investigate the place of Christianity – historically, theoretically, and practically – in Europe’s (and individual European countries’) ongoing challenges. Do these challenges constitute a crisis? If so, what kind of crisis does Europe face? What is the role of Christianity (actual, or possible) in exacerbating the challenges Europe faces, or in resolving them? We will deploy a variety of methodologies to approach and address these and other questions about the intersection of Christianity, politics, and identity in Europe.

Religion in Praxis Conversations Series | Anna Grzymala Busse

This is the thirteenth episode of the Praxis in Religion Conversation Series and the opening of a new season, in which the following questions in posed: How did the state arise in Europe? The canonical answer is Charles Tilly’s: “war made the state and the state made war.” The starting point is the fragmentation of territorial political authority in Europe after the collapse of the Carolingian empire in 888, and the ambitions of rulers in the early modern (1500-1700) era. To expand their rule, monarchs and princes fought bitter wars with other other—and to fund this increasingly costly warfare, they extracted taxes. Domestic institutions such as state administrations, fiscal offices, and parliaments arose in response to these needs.  In these “bellecist” accounts, rulers who succeeded in building up the administrative and military apparatus of war went on to consolidate their territorial gains and ensure the survival of their states. These relentless pressures eventually meant fewer and bigger states, from as many as 500 independent states in Europe in 1500 to 30 four centuries later. In a current episode, Anna Grzymala Busse takes Charles Tilly to church, and questions each of these core pillars of the bellecist story. She shows that roots of many state institutions are found in the medieval era, not the early modern. Fragmentation was not simply a post-imperial legacy, but a sustained and deliberate policy.

Peter Halldorf | Den andra världen är den här världen

Den 2:a juni 2022, höll årets hedersdoktor vid CTR, Peter Halldorf, sin en föreläsning under rubriken: "Den andra världen är den här världen. Philip Sherrards vision och vår planets akutläge."
Peter Halldorf är pastor i pingströrelsen men huvudsakligen känd som redaktör för tidskriften Pilgrim och författare av ett trettiotal böcker. Halldorf har länge varit en av de mest centrala gestalterna inom svensk ekumenik och en av svensk kristenhets mest lästa författare och teologiska folkbildare. Förankrad i den svenska pingströrelsen och frikyrkligheten i allmänhet har han blivit en välkänd och uppskattad teolog även inom Svenska kyrkan, Stockholms katolska stift och de ortodoxa kyrkorna i Sverige, samt internationellt.
Genom sitt redaktörskap, sin stora bokproduktion, men också sin omfattande föredragsverksamhet, har Halldorf haft ett stort genomslag i svensk kristenhet och väsentligt ökat olika kristna gruppers förståelse för varandra. För sitt arbete har Halldorf mottagit ett flertal priser och utmärkelser.

Volker Küster | Artist in Resistence: Protest, Memory & Reconciliation

Volker Küster is, together with Anita Goldman (author, Stockholm), the honorary doctors of 2020 at CTR. The topic of the lecture is "Artist in Resistence: Protest, Memory & Reconciliation."
Küster is the Professor of Comparative Religion and Missiology at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, Germany and is one of the most prominent figures of intercultural theology, mission studies and research on global Christianity. Küster presented the thesis, Theologie im Kontext: Zugleich ein Versuch uber die MinjungTheologie, in Heidelberg 1995 and has since then worked toward an integration of intercultural perspectives into the discipline of Theology, for instance with the book: Einführung in die interkulturelle Theologie (2011.) Other important works are The Many Faces of Jesus Christ: lnterculturalChristology (2001), and a continuation of studies on Minjung-theology, primarily in A Protestant Theology of Passion: Minjung Theology revisited (2010).s

Jeff Love | Between Kant and Hegel: Alexandre Kojève and the End of Law

This episode is a re-publication of a seminar organised by the research project the End of Law, at CTR. Dr Mårten Björk will take the lead, and introduces the inaugural episode of the End of law podcast, and a lecture by professor Jeff Lo ve, with the title: "Between Kant and Hegel: Alexandre Kojève and the End of Law" It was recorded on 1 June 2021 as part of the Law, Theology and Culture seminar in Lund.
Alexandre Kojève is best known for the influential lectures he gave on Hegel to an enthralled audience of French intellectuals including Raymond Aron, Henry Corbin, Jacques Lacan, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Aside from these lectures, published in 1947 as Introduction to the Reading of Hegel, Kojéve published relatively little before his death in 1968. Yet, he left over 26 boxes of unpublished material on a variety of topics, from quantum physics and the continuum hypothesis to a major treatise on law called Outline of a Phenomenology of Right (Esquisse d'une phénoménologie du droit). Kojève wrote this treatise (586 pages in the French book edition) in 1943 while living in Vichy France. He expounds in it a comprehensive theory of justice and the universal homogeneous state that promises to usher in the end of history and perhaps of law itself. In my talk, I shall examine some of the central legal features of Kojève's universal and homogeneous state and consider whether Kojève actually affirms that history can be brought to an end through a final legal regime or not. In this respect, Kojève reprises his end of history thesis from the Hegel lectures as well as putting it in question, opposing Hegelian finality to what Kojeve terms Kantian "skepticism" about final ends. 
Jeff Love is Research Professor of German and Russian at Clemson University. He is the author of The Black Circle: A Life of Alexandre Kojève (Columbia University Press, 2018), Tolstoy: A Guide for the Perplexed (Continuum, 2008), and The Overcoming of History in War and Peace (Brill, 2004). He has also published a translation of Alexandre Kojève’s Atheism (Columbia University Press, 2018), an annotated translation (with Johannes Schmidt) of F.W. J. Schelling’s Philosophical Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom (State University of New York Press, 2006), and recently a translation of António Lobo Antunes’s novel Until Stones Become Lighter Than Water (Yale University Press, 2019).

Religion in Praxis Conversations Series | Nicholas Denysenko

This is the twelfth episode of the Praxis in Religion Conversation Series. In this conversation, titled "A Rebirth of Orthodoxy: Moral and Epistemological Preliminaries," Professor Denysenko reflects on the historical tensions simmering between Ecumenical and Moscow Patriarchates since 1920s. Denysenko examines the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s intervention in Ukraine and the creation of Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and provides a scholarly analysis of and debate on Russian world ideain the wider ecclesial psychological framework. The conversation between Tornike Metreveli and Nicholas Denysenko delves deeper into the Ukrainian resistance to the Russian world since 2009, power dynamics within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), their anti-war position and ethical, moral and theological implications of the Russian invasion on Orthodox Christianity globally.
 
Nicholas Denysenko serves as Emil and Elfriede Jochum Professor and Chair and concurrently as associate professor of theology. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota (1994), and his graduate degrees at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (M.Div., 2000) and The Catholic University of America (Ph.D., 2008)

Yvonne Maria Werner | Den postreformatoriska katolicismen i Norden

Dagens avsnitt är en föreläsning av 2021 års hedersdoktor vid CTR: Yvonne Maria Werner, professor och forskare vid historiska institutionen, Lunds universitet. På grund av pandemin kunde CTR inte sammankalla till detta högtidstillfälle, innan majmånad 2022. Under föreläsningen, "Den postreformatoriska katolicismen i Norden: mission, konversion och alternativa identitetsdiskurser" förekommer en rad bilder för åhörarna på plats, vilka även finns att tillgå här för den som önskar.  
Yvonne Maria Werner är professor i historia vid Lunds universitet. I sin forskning och undervisning har hon som få historiker i Sverige berört religionens inflytande på de väst- och nordeuropeiska samhällena i allmänhet och på det svenska samhället i synnerhet. För sin betydande insats och mångåriga yrkesgärning utses hon till hedersdoktor vid Teologiska fakulteten.
Werner disputerade 1989 på en avhandling om svensk-tyska relationer kring sekelskiftet 1900, och hennes vetenskapliga produktion har därefter främst varit inriktad på nor­disk katolsk kulturhistoria under 1800- och 1900-talen, vilket otaliga artiklar, antologier och monografier vittnar om. I sin forskning uppehåller sig Werner särskilt vid samspelet mellan religion, politik, genus och samhälle under tidigmodern och modern tid, och det är också detta samspel som hamnat i fokus i de av henne initierade och ledda forskningsprojekten ”Den kvinnliga klosterrörelsen i Norden. En kvinnlig motkultur i det moderna samhället” och ”Kristen manlighet – en modernitetens paradox: Män och religion i en nordeuro­peisk kontext 1840-1940”. I det sistnämnda projektet ingick flera kyrkohistoriker från CTR, Centrum för teologi och religionsvetenskap. Dessa två, och andra forskningsprojekt som Werner varit engagerad i, har haft en tydlig internat­ionell profil och fört samman forskare från stora delar av Europa.
Werner har också forskat om synen på och hanteringen av döden under tidigmodern tid. Ett centralt stråk i Werners forskning under senare år har därtill varit de antikatolska strömningar som åtminstone fram till Sveriges inträde i EU 1995 funnits under ytan i det svenska samhället. Werner har härvid dragit intressanta historiska paralleller till vår tids tilltagande antisemitism och islamofobi. Som handledare i forskarutbildningen har Werner handlett forskningsprojekt som belyser kyr­kans inverkan på mentalitet och samhälle under tidigmodern och modern tid. Werner har varit huvud- och bihandledare för flera avhandlingsprojekt som haft tydlig religionsvetenskaplig − främst kyrkohistorisk − bäring. Ytterligare ett exempel på Werners engagemang i den kyrkohistoriska forskningsmiljön är en mångårig och mycket omfattande insats som recensent i Kyrkohistorisk årsskrift.
Werner har under många år samarbetat med forskare vid CTR på ett sätt som gynnat såväl enskilda kollegor som den kyrkohistoriska miljön vid institutionen i stort. Ett uttryck för hennes önskan att samla personer som är intresserade av dessa frågor är forskarseminariet ”Historia och religion” som hon startade vid Historiska institutionen 2010 och som blivit en mötesplats för historiker från olika discipliner, däribland kyrkohistoriker. Många är de kollegor som vittnar om Werners energi och ständiga beredvillighet att diskutera forskningsfrågor och nya forskningsuppslag.
"Yvonne Maria Werner har starkt bidragit till att svenska historiker från 1990-talet och framåt återupptäckt religionens roll i historien", säger fakultetens dekanus, professor Samuel Byrskog. "Att utse henne till hedersdoktor vid Teologiska fakulteten är vårt sätt att visa uppskattning för ett långt och givande samarbete över ämnesgränserna."

Volker Küster | Contextualization, Syncretism, Multireligious Identities...

Today's episode is a presentation given by Volker Küster: an honorary doctor at CTR, and Professor of Comparative Religion and Missiology at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, Germany. This is a part of the ongoing series of snapshots from the Multireligious identities-conference, held in memory of the late Aasulv Lande, in March 2022 at CTR and this time the topic for the talk is " Contextualization, Syncretism, Multireligious Identities... What's in a Word? Third World Christian Art Revisited."
Mika Vähäkangas mentions the alludes to the fact that Prof. Küster also gave a lecture in relation in the month of May 2022, on the occasion of becoming an honorary doctor at CTR. This will be published as a separate episode, and will appear soon in this feed.
